Rebuilding 4 bangers are farily straightforward. Just need a manual for it. Hell, I pulled a Chevy 350 apart and reassembled it.

It's straight-forward if the parts are available. For this, they won't be as only a few hundred of them were made at all.

If the only problem is the engine, you should be okay. It's a BP series engine, which means that there are plenty of donors available, if you look outside the GTX model. Mazda and Ford put that engine in everything. I have faith, for what faith from a burner is worth.

Doesn't the four pot in these share allot in common with na and nb miata motors so in that sense it should be pain free right? but your out of luck if the awd is out of order as this was the only awd car other than some jdm kei car/ van of this vintage.

I'd agree with you if the engine wasn't so common, I think it's a B series engine. Mazda put variations of that engine in almost everything if I recall, even the Miata. I did a quick search on Rockauto, and found a whole list of parts that can be bought for a Mazda 323 with a turbo engine (and that can fit an AWD model, too). After reading around, I feel that the AWD transmission should be a bigger concern than the engine.
I'd be willing to take this as a project if I had the money saved up to work on it. I'd give the engine a rebuild with a new head/valvetrain, maybe new pistons as well, and I'll be on my way to having a fun daily.
